Hearing God's voice has not only been a mystery to many believers but it has caused so much confusion. Your christian life and wellbeing are hanging upon your ability to hear God's voice. The voice of God brings life, strength and instruction. Hearing God might sometimes be a matter of life or death, if you fail to discern His voice and know which way is right for you to take. The truth about it is that listening to God is not as difficult and mysterious as many of think. The phenomenon of listening to God has been compared to a radio antenna that is receiving signals from a radio station. When the radio set gets broken for whatever reason and is no longer receiving any signals, it is not because the radio station has stopped producing signals. The signals could still be there all over around the radio but the home antenna is just having difficulties picking them up. The same is true about the voice of God. He speaks to every single one of His children but like the broken radio set, we just have problems picking up these signals. It will receive these signals instantly if the radio set is functioning well. God is always speaking to us. The issue is not the lack of His voice, but our inability to recognize that voice when He speaks to us.

Part of our difficulty in recognizing His voice come from the fact that we expect His voice to come to us in a “God-like” manner. We sometimes also expect the voice of God to us to be like a human voice that is audible just as someone speaking to you. God's voice to us is not necessarily an audible sound. His voice is not a sound. His voice comes to us in different ways. What we call the voice of God can be heard as an impression in our hearts only. That means God can speak to you and you do not hear an audible voice but have an impression in your heart. God can also speak to you and all you “hear” is a picture in your mind. His Word can come to you as a vision that you see, whether in dream or some mental image. The key is to recognize that what you are seeing, feeling or hearing is not just the ordinary but is the voice of God. This article from Glory & Grace Ministries further describes how to hear from God.
