Irene Michalek, 96, passed away peacefully at Lourdes Hospital on October 18, 2010. She was predeceased by her husband, William M.; and her son, William P. She is survived by her son, Gary, Lafayette, CA; and sister, Ann Waldron, Lopez, PA. We are very grateful for the wonderful love and support she received from her four nieces, Patricia (Charles) Mulesky, Michelle (Robert) Hanss, Jeanne (Ronald) Hopkins, Barbara (Ronald) Calaman; very thoughtful and supportive nephews, John (Ida) Bowers, Thomas (June) Bowers, Peter (Dee) Sulick, Charles Sulick, and Michael (Shirley) Sulick, as well as nephew, Francis (Barbara) Michalek; nieces, Dolores (Doug) Williams and Maryann Michalek. Irene graduated from Lopez High School and Ridley-Lowell School of Business and was a career working mother having been employed by Ansco, Links Aviation, GE and Broome County Social Services. Irene remained active during her retirement through various volunteer activities such as blanket knitting and holiday decorations for senior citizen groups and baking cookies for US troops and homeless people. She was a past member of the Czechoslovakia Moravian Club, First Ward Senior Citizens, and a member of SS Cyril and Method Church. A thank you to Lourdes Hospital Hospice Unit for their compassionate care and to a special neighbor, Sally Husar, who was always there to share a cup of coffee and keep her company. There will be no calling hours. A Funeral Mass will be held October 21, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. at SS Cyril and Method Church, 148 Clinton St., Binghamton. Burial will follow at Cavalry Cemetery.
